A Welcome Ambassador is a friendly face that greets you on the streets and shows you how to make the most of your time in Sligo. We’re available day and night to help with all of your queries. A few hours of your time is all it takes to make a big difference in your community.

THE ROLE OF THE SLIGO AMBASSADOR

We are looking for volunteers with outstanding people skills to join our Sligo Welcome Ambassadors programme. The role is unique in the fact that it puts a huge emphasis on much needed engagement with locals and visitors alike in Sligo town. As a Sligo Welcome Ambassador, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Give a warm welcome to our visitors and provide an exceptional customer service.
  • Promote Sligo’s unique culture and heritage.
  • Provide information about our local amenities and events.
  • Provide recommendations and directions for local points of interest.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A friendly and welcoming personality.
  • A passion for Sligo and its culture.
  • The ability to work well in a team.
  • Flexibility to work weekends.

No – as long as you can walk around the city centre you can patrol with us.

Minimum time commitment is 4hrs monthly for 1 year. The programme will run over 7 days Sunday to Saturday from 12 mid-day until 2am the following morning. The rota will be broken down into 4hr shifts with a break in between. Each team will consist of 2/3 volunteers and will be assigned a pacific route in the town to offer assistance to all who need it.

While on the town, the Welcome  Ambassadors will be watchful for unwanted behaviour and report to local authorities via established communication methods.

The Welcome Ambassadors will go out of their way to actively acknowledge locals with a friendly greeting and identify visitors in order to provide directions, information or recommendations.

Welcome Ambassadors will be responsible for making a specified number of visits to local businesses to share information and make contact on behalf of the Sligo Welcome Ambassadors programme.

Welcome Ambassadors will be acting as representatives of the people of Sligo town and are required to be professional, friendly and approachable at all times. The reputation of the programme depends on the relationship between our ambassadors and our visitors, and we protect it at all costs.

Welcome Ambassadors must have the physical capacity to traverse a given route over a 4hr period. This will include a break for refreshments. They must be able to work outdoors in all conditions with provided inclement weather gear.

Welcome Ambassadors must be able to speak English at a competent level and have a good knowledge of Sligo.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We do our best to ensure the safety of our volunteers. Street Angels patrol in groups of at least two, always including at least one man and one woman. Each patrol is in contact with the CCTV and police. We have had very few incidents in which Street Angels have felt threatened. Usually we are in far more ‘danger’ of being hugged than attacked!

You need to be 18 or over. There is no upper age limit as long as you are able to walk the route.

No – as long as you can walk around the city centre you can patrol with us.

Warm, comfortable clothes – and, in winter, a hat and gloves. Please do not wear jeans as they soak up water when it rains and you would be very cold and uncomfortable. Waterproof trousers can be helpful when it rains. We provide warm, waterproof hi-viz jackets in various sizes.

Warm clothes (see above). Something to eat – or money to buy a take-away in one of the many shops near the base. We provide hot drinks and biscuits.

No. Just park in town and walk. We will ensure you do not walk back to your car on your own at the end of the night.
