In 1861, as the Civil War erupted, Doherty eagerly enlisted in the Union Army. He joined the 71st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, serving as a second lieutenant. Doherty quickly proved himself to be a capable and courageous soldier. His skills and leadership qualities did not go unnoticed. He was promoted to the rank of captain in recognition of his abilities.
Doherty’s defining moment came in April 1865 when he played a critical role in the pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln. Following Lincoln’s assassination, Booth fled, leading to a massive manhunt. Doherty, serving as a captain in the 16th New York Cavalry, was one of the officers entrusted with the task of capturing Booth.
On April 26, 1865, Doherty led a team of cavalrymen to a tobacco barn in Virginia where Booth and his accomplice, David Herold, were hiding. In a tense standoff, Doherty and his men set the barn on fire, forcing Booth to surrender. While Herold surrendered peacefully, Booth refused to comply and was shot by Sergeant Boston Corbett, sustaining fatal injuries. Doherty’s role in the capture of Booth earned him accolades and recognition throughout the country.
Following the war, Doherty continued his military career, rising through the ranks. He participated in the Indian Wars, serving in various capacities. Additionally, Doherty served as a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. This was an organization composed of Union officers who had served during the Civil War.
